you don’t have to have a Boat Anchor to check in, but we encourage boat anchor’s or “any radio with tubes” to check in, but any radio is fine as long as you have a interest in vintage ham radios.
The Albuquerque Boat Anchor net has been on the air since 2011. It was started with the purpose of maintaining interest in the older “Boat Anchor” type radios. For this net, a radio is considered a boat anchor if it has several tubes in it. That does include the hybrids. It is an open net, you can check-in with any radio you choose. The net operates Thursday evening, with the Early Bird portion starting at 20:30 Eastern for 1/2 hour. Check-ins on the early bird portion cannot qualify for any of the awards/prizes offered. It meets on or about 7.211 Mhz, Lower sideband, as conditions permit. You may have to tune a bit up or down. It is open to anyone who can legally operate on the frequency, even outside the U.S.

is also held at times. The drawing will be for a major radio related item. It may be a transmitter, receiver, transceiver or other associated equipment. Two randomly designated check-in numbers are announced at the beginning of the net proper. Normally, we collect a total of 28 contestants for the item in the drawing. Under good conditions, 14 weeks will pass from the start to the finish of the drawing period. If you check in on one of the announced numbers, you have the option to participate in the drawing, or not. If you choose not to, the next caller will get the option. One win per person per year is the rule.
At the point where we have 28 names “In the hat”, a winner will be drawn and will be notified via E-Mail at the E-Mail address listed on their QRZ page. If no address is listed, the person must have notified Ken of an alternate E-mail address in order to be notified if selected as the winner. This means that at the announced end point, you must start checking your E-Mail regularly. If you win but don’t respond within a couple of days, Ken will choose another winner. When contacted, Ken will inform the winner of the shipping cost, and the winner must agree to pay the shipping (by FED-EX). There is NO other cost, as the item is FREE. You can also arrange for pick up in person if you are close to Albuquerque.

At the beginning of the net proper at 21:00 Eastern, Ken, KO5Y will announce the week’s Mystery Rig. It will always be a boat anchor radio. The first person to check in to the net proper, operating the designated mystery rig, will win a small prize. The prize is completely free, no shipping or other charges. The “Mystery” part is what Ken will send you. It will be ham radio related, something he will select from his copious store of spare parts and accessories. If there is a specific item the winner needs, he/she can make this known to Ken and if Ken has it, he will send that.
